is the ongoing situation regarding the death of ambassador christopher stevens in libya. lots of vagueness about what really went on in the days leading up to this and indeed, afterwards. what is your assessment of where we are now? >> well, let me tell you what's not vague, and that is five days after, five days after what was very quickly determined by the intelligence committee as a terrorist attack, they trotted out our ambassador to the u.n. to every major news outlet saying that this was a spontaneous demonstration because of a hateful video. that's probably one of the worst things that i have ever observed in my life, and obviously, there were warnings and obviously anybody who believes that an attack with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades and a very sophisticated attack is the result of a video, i mean, it's just ridiculous. and finally, piers, it's not the video that's stoking these demonstrations. as you know, it's the radical islamists that are using the videos as a means of inflaming passion in the middle east and i'll be damned if i'm ready to abandon the freedom of speech becau

, the mission was in benghazi, we understand that chris stevens wanted to be there, had a connection to benghazi, had been there during the war. but was he adequately secured and what about the nurfailures intelligence. >> they knew libya was not going to calm down overnight and have multiparty elections and a normal place overnight. they had to look at the tactical issues there and it seemed there were a lot of problems with militias running around not integrated into any police force let alone the national army. there were issues they needed to look at. on the other hand you're trying to manage that risk with the need to get out, talk to the libyan people, make sure they understand that we care, that we didn't just lose interest once gadhafi left the scene. i think it is -- it was very important to get out there, but, you know, i think the accountability review board is going to look at that very crucial question how well did they manage the risk? you cannot eliminate the risk. this is what diplomats do. we are out there, many of these circumstances, so i think it was the right thing to be out

stevens and three other americans were killed in that attack. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly joins me live from washington. did intelligence agencies really not have enough formation, or were they covering up parts, as some are suggesting? >> that's a great question, and i think what we're starting to see now is a little bit behind the curtain, if you will, with the intelligence community coming out with this very unusual statement really about what it knew. although it's not nailing down exactly the timeline. now, you have to remember in those first 24 hours after this attack, things were coming in, they were initial assessments and the intelligence community is basically saying look, guys, we know that initial assessments are sometimes wrong because you just haven't gathered enough information yet. but let me read to you what shawn turner said. he's the director of communications for the office of the director of national intelligence, the president's top intelligence adviser here. as we learn more about the attack, we revised our initial assessment to reflect new informati
